According to the researcher José Orlando Bretão, “the tambourine was probably introduced by Joaquim Sales Farôpa who, as far as I know, was the first author (or one of the first) to write and rehearse danças to be presented in the evening, at the ground floor of the great two-storey houses of Ramo Grande” (José Orlando Bretão, As Danças do Entrudo: Uma Festa do Povo, v. 1, Angra do Heroísmo, Direção Regional da Cultura, 1998, p. 479).
