Maia Tobacco Museum

To know, understand and value tobacco agroindustry in Maia parish, as well as its memory and historical and social impact from a perspective of local development.

At the parish of Maia, in the northern area of São Miguel Island, to the east of Ribeira Grande municipality, is located the Maia Tobacco Museum, a scientific and cultural structure of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Divino Espírito Santo da Maia, the only European museum devoted to the research and promotion of tobacco agroindustry, from a perspective of social and local development.

Apart from contributing to preserve the historical and social memory of tobacco culture in Maia parish, Maia Tobacco Museum primarily aims at merging this heritage resources with a global project that makes for the socio-economic development of the parishes belonging to the eastern area of Ribeira Grande municipality (Porto Formoso, São Brás, Maia, Lomba da Maia, Fenais D’Ajuda and Lomba de São Pedro).

The long-term exhibition encompasses 5 areas: the weighing and pressing room, the direct heat dryer, the indirect heat dryer, the weighbridge and tobacco plantations. There is also a small tea-room, where the visitor can taste our delicious liqueurs and the renowned tea locally produced, or just rest and appreciate the surroundings.

The museum has a small auditorium – the “Hermano Mota Auditorium” – which is also used as a room for temporary exhibitions, as well as a library.
